Paul Van Houden, O.D. Optometrist

Paul Van Houden, O.D. graduated from Southern California College of Optometry in 1968 with a B.S. and Doctor of Optometry. After serving two years in the Army as an Optometrist, Dr. Van Houden joined Dr. Jerome Lieblein in San Diego. They practiced together as partners for 26 years with Dr. Lieblein retiring in 1998.

Dr. Van Houden has served his profession both as president of the San Diego Optometric Society in 1988 and then President of the 5,000 member California Optometric Association in 1995. He continues to be active on a legislative and professional level. Local activities include participation in the Lions Optometric Vision Clinic, St Vincent de Paul’s Center for the homeless, and consultant to a number of school districts in San Diego.

Personally, Dr. Van Houden and Kenda have been married for over 30 years and have four children and seven grandchildren. They enjoy antiquing, traveling, and just enjoying San Diego in all its beauty and splendor.

Gary P. Krueger, O.D., F.A.A.O.
Optometrist

Dr. Krueger is a native Californian who grew up in the Bishop and Mammoth area of the eastern high sierras. After graduating from bishop high, Dr. Krueger attended the University of Redlands on a football and track scholarship. He received his optometric education at the Los Angeles College of Optometry, graduating with magna cum laude honors in 1971. After serving in the United States Army as an optometrist, Dr. Krueger joined the private practice of Jessop and Jessop in 1973. Dr.’s Jessop and Krueger practiced at several locations in the Hillcrest area. Dr. Krueger belongs to the AOA, COA, SDCOS, (all professional optometric associations) and is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. His hobbies are skiing, sailing, and fresh water fishing. Dr. Krueger specializes in difficult contact lens fittings and medical optometry.

Dr. David Jessop In Memoriam

We regrettably report the loss of Dr. David Jessop, Jr. on August 29, 2011. Dr. Jessop, age 72, was a second generation optometrist who began practicing optometry with his father Dr. David Jessop, Sr. in the early sixties. They practiced for several years before taking on Dr. Gary Krueger as a partner in 1973. The group was located in the Hillcrest area until the retirement of Dr. Jessop, Sr. in 1985. From 1985 to 2004, Jessop, Jr. and Krueger had several office locations in Hillcrest and Mission Valley until they joined their practice with Dr. Phil Van Houden in January 2004.

Jessop Jr. was an avid fisherman and hunter who enjoyed the outdoor life, Mission Beach, Tommy Bahama shirts and shorts, and sunsets on the beach. He was always looking for that rare green flash as the sun settled on the ocean. His death was a surprise and it was reported he had a sudden massive heart attack and died almost instantly. He will be missed by all who knew him. He asked to have his ashes scattered at sea.

Dr. Krueger is taking over Dr. Jessop Jr.'s patients and will strive to continue to give the professional comprehensive examinations including adding a little good humor, a trademark of Dr. Jessop, Jr.
